Preliminary Task-Evaluation

This is the completed preliminary task.

I enjoyed creating this music video because there was a variety of shot lengths and distances. It was quite difficult to get the timings of the music exactly in time with the visuals but this created a good effect, as the actual music video was the same.

In the beginning, whilst getting into the car the zoom is very uneven as we used the button on the camera, this also caused the frame to loose focus. We have learnt from this that to get a smooth zoom on a shot we should physically move the camera forward, this is called 'tracking'. This will enable us to zoom in on exactly what we want at the speed we want whilst also keeping it in focus.

I am disappointed that the camera is very shaky when filming the side-on views in the moving car. Although sometimes this can create a good effect, like at 9-15 seconds when it's just a landscape view, I think it distracts the viewer from the song and lyrics as they would be concentrating on the visuals too much. Also the video lacked in continuity as the filming of the back was in a stationary car because we could not film it whilst moving as it was filmed from the drivers set. The cuts back to the driver in this sequence was in a moving car, on the other hand, we were happy with the camera angles and general filming of this sequence.

Overall I am quite happy with the outcome of the task, however we can learn from the things we did wrong, I feel this has prepared us for the real task as we have more of an idea of how the music videos work.

Preliminary Task Idea 2-Storyboard

This is the storyboard for the first minute of 'Ironic'. It includes 12 shots, each shot has the timings and a short description of what is seen within it, as well as the type of shot e.g. close-up, extreme close up.

Preliminary Task Idea 2-Shotlist

I have created a shot list with the timing (seconds) each shot appears and the type of shot it is, also with a short description of what is happening within the frame. This will make filming much easier and more organised, especially with the storyboard included.

Preliminary Task Idea 2-Aim

This is our second idea for the preliminary task. The aim of the preliminary task is to improve our filming and editing skills through reproducing a minute of a music video.

An unseen woman singing and bending down with the microphone. The background is red lights with shadows, and the words "Alanis", "Morissette" and "Ironic" are written in white cursive letters at the bottom half of the image. We have decided to recreate the first minute of Alanis Morissette's 'Ironic', we have chosen this music video to recreate because it has different shots and camera angles included. It also contains zooming, close-ups, extreme close-ups and mirror reflections. This video is filmed in a car so would be very accessible for us to film.

This song was on the album 'Jagged Little Pill' which was released in 1995. The pop-rock single was released on February 27th 1996.
